Création 2011 – Übü Király

À l’heure où aucun despote ne règne plus, pourquoi se replonger dans l’odyssée du Père Ubu ? En effet, peut-on encore, dans notre monde ouvert et civilisé, trembler en imaginant les ravages d’une “machine à décervelage” sur nos esprits sagaces ? Ou frémir à l’idée d’être ponctionnés par une fantastique “pompe à phynances” ? Non, bien sûr. Rassurons-nous : personne de nos jours ne cherche plus, par les moyens les plus brutaux, à “se procurer un parapluie”, ou à semer la misère et la désolation dans le seul but de “manger plus souvent de l’andouille”…

On pourra donc rire sans mélange aux facéties toujours vertes d’Alfred Jarry, absurdités fomentées en 1896 dans le seul but de semer la merdre… Un projet qu’il allait jusqu’à énoncer : “Il fallait que la pièce ne pût aller au bout et que le théâtre éclatât. Sous le signe de “l’esprit d’inventivité et de la folie créatrice”, Alain Timár a dirigé une troupe d’acteurs roumains – témoins privilégiés des garanties sans faille de la démo­cratie – qu’il a encouragé à “transgresser avec entrain les conventions théâtrales”. Dans cet Ubu roi joué en hongrois, “chaque acteur peut se retrouver dans la peau du bon ou du méchant, du gagnant ou du perdant en fonction de l’humeur ou de l’histoire”. Tous seront donc tour à tour nobles et conjurés, conseillers et larbins de phynances, gardes, capitaines ou ours…

Que chacun vienne cependant sans crainte : contrairement au public de la fin du XIXe siècle, nul ne risque plus aujourd’hui d’être “stupéfait à la vue de son double ignoble, qui ne lui avait pas encore été entièrement présenté”.

« Ubu King » by Alfred Jarry

At a time when the dictator no longer reigns supreme, why do we plunge into the odyssey of the Father Ubu? Do we still today, in our open and civilized world, shudder in imagining a machine that could brainwash our discerning minds? Or tremble in fear at the thought of falling victim to a fantastical contraption called here the « pompe à phynances »? Of course not. Reassure yourselves: In our times, no one resorts to the most brutal methods to simply « procure an umbrella » nor breeds misery and desolation in the sole objective of « eating sausage more often. »  …

Therefore, we can laugh wholeheartedly at the witticisms — still relevant today — of Alfred Jarry, the absurdities he created in 1896 for the sole purpose of sowing discord. Of the project he was to say, « It had to be that the play goes to the very end and that the theater erupts. » Championing the  « spirit of originality » and the « madness of creativity, » Alain Timár has directed a company of Romanian actors — privileged witnesses to the full-throated guaranties of democracy — whom he has encouraged to « cheerily violate the conventions of the theater. » In this Hungarian version of « Ubu King, » says Timár, « Each actor can play the role of someone good or evil, rich or poor,in function of the humor or of the story. » All will have, therefore, their turn as nobles and conspirators, counselors and lackeys to the « phynances, » guards, captains and brutes…  

That each one comes, however, without fear: Contrary to the audiences at theend of the 19th century, no one need risk anything today to be « stupefied by the sight of their ignoble double, the alter ego that had not been faced, until now. »
